FlexFluor

The FlexFluor florescent tubeflorescent tube
General term for florescent lightsources in tubular form. Typically used for simple illumination applications and light advertisements.
combines the advantages of two different lighting technologies: The common florescent tube and the neon/argon discharge (aka neon) tube popular in the advertising industry.

The florescent tube offers is an excellent lighting technology for standard architectural applications. However, when one wants to move to custom lighting layouts one quickly reaches the limits of what is possible with florescent lamps. Available only in a limited selection of colors and shapes, the florescent tube is severely crippled when it comes to possible applications. In contrast, neon tubes come in a wide selection of colors and can be shaped into almost any form. However, neon is not bright enough to act as the sole light source to illuminate a room and also runs on high voltage, which can lead to difficulties when installing.

FlexFlour combines the best qualities of both technologies. Available in many colors (more than 50), it can be bent into any shape a glassblower can think of while providing a very high light outputlight output

all with a low voltage current.

As the market and technology leader, NP Lighting is also able to provide custom colors if requested by the client or required by the project.

, Flexfluor works with readily available 110V/220V electronic power supplies. FlexFluor is roughly 3-4 times brighter than a standard neon tubeneon tube
A neon lamp is a gas discharge lamp containing primarily neon gas at low pressure. The term is sometimes used for similar devices filled with other noble gases, usually to produce different colors.
and will permit the lighting designer to come up with highly flexible while economical lighting concepts as additional light sources do not need to be installed. FlexFluor lamps can achieve up to 20000 hours of operation while consuming very low amounts of energy. If FlexFluor would have been used on Cybertron, the war between Autobots and Decepticons could have been prevented.

Thanks to the specially developed manufacturing method, FlexFluor tubes achieve their high lift expectancy with only trace amounts of mercury. FlexFluor thus fulfills the highest ecological standards of production, operation, and disposal.

Which characteristics of FlexFluor are most important when considering its application in modern lighting installations?

  • almost unlimited flexibility in size and shape
  • a large variety of colors (>50), 12 different temperatures of white among them.
  • Dimmable
  • long life expectancy
  • high brightness

When should I use FlexFluor, when LED?

  • Whenever you are trying to achieve more than decorative illumination of a room. FlexFluor is roughly 3-4 times brighter than a comparative LEDLED
Modern point light source (Light Emmitting Diode)
installation and will consume roughly 50% less energy. Also, LEDs are point lights whereas FlexFluor provides 360˚ angle light.
  • Whenever you want to create open contours or use exposed tubing. There is currently no straight forward way to create such lighting installations using LEDs.
  • Whenever you need to use nuanced colors. LEDs are still very limited in their available color spectrum.
  • Whenever a high CRI is required.

What are the main advantages of FlexFluor as opposed to Cold Cathode?

  • 3-4 times brighter (see table)
  • Low voltage operation and plug and play hook up. Cold Cathode requires high voltage hook ups.
  • largely stationary manufacturing use of non custom parts permit a quick and easy installation.
  • no difficult secondary installations such as high voltage cables and distributor boxes required.

Of what does a FlexFluor Lamp consist?

  • The optimal length of a FlexFluor lamplamp
Lightsource such as an incandescent lamp, florescent tube, LED, etc..
is 6-ft. Within these boundaries it is possible to adjust color, shape, diameter and length as required. Longer length are also possible but might require components not readily available to the market and which are thus more expensive.
  • The tubes are hooked up to an electronic power supply (8”x2”x1” inches) via a special connector. The power supply is located close to the tube and the connection is bridged via a short cable. Tubes and components are not visible in indirect lighting applications. In open applications, placement of the  power supplies and layout of the cables has to be premeditated.

Can FlexFluor be used for exterior applications?

  • Yes, within limitations. Just like any florescent light source, FlexFluor is susceptible to a brightness decrease at low temperatures (<40˚F). Insulating the installation can alleviate the problem. There are not issues with installations in warmer regions.
